The grammar behind your chart識文解字 · 明理知命
MingPath is built on four thousand years of Chinese cosmological thought. Below are the nine ideas that make a chart legible — no prior knowledge assumed, no mysticism required to follow along.
The six doors in
Each element and BaZi itself has its own deep-dive page. This page gives you enough of each to read a chart at a glance.
BaZi — the Four Pillars
Your birth moment is recorded as four pillars — year, month, day, hour. Each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem 天干 with an Earthly Branch 地支, together mapping your chart onto the Five Phases.
Illustrative sample only — the four pillars shown above are for explanation; every person’s chart is unique to their own birth moment. 上图四柱仅为讲解样例,每个人的八字排列皆独一无二。
The four pillars are not a personality test in the Western sense — they are a map of tendencies, the raw material of your energy at the moment you arrived. That map is read through several lenses: the strength of your Day Master, the balance of the Five Phases, the Ten Gods that link each pillar back to your core self, and the luck cycles that unfold through life.
The Day Master 日主 — the stem of the day pillar, highlighted above — is the center of the chart. Everything else is measured against it: which elements support you, which pressure you, and which you naturally express outward.
The Five Phases
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water relate to each other in two cycles running at once — one that feeds, one that checks.
Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches
The Ten Heavenly Stems 十天干 rotate through the Five Phases in paired yin–yang forms:
The Twelve Earthly Branches 十二地支 are each an animal, a season, and a set of hidden stems 藏干 — energies stored within the branch. Professional readings count branches more deeply than their surface animal, since the hidden stems carry real weight:
| Branch | Animal | Main hidden stem | Secondary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 子Zǐ | Rat 鼠 | Water 癸 | — |
| 丑Chǒu | Ox 牛 | Earth 己 | Water, Metal |
| 寅Yín | Tiger 虎 | Wood 甲 | Fire, Earth |
| 卯Mǎo | Rabbit 兔 | Wood 乙 | — |
| 辰Chén | Dragon 龍 | Earth 戊 | Wood, Water |
| 巳Sì | Snake 蛇 | Fire 丙 | Metal, Earth |
| 午Wǔ | Horse 馬 | Fire 丁 | Earth |
| 未Wèi | Goat 羊 | Earth 己 | Fire, Wood |
| 申Shēn | Monkey 猴 | Metal 庚 | Water, Earth |
| 酉Yǒu | Rooster 雞 | Metal 辛 | — |
| 戌Xū | Dog 狗 | Earth 戊 | Metal, Fire |
| 亥Hài | Pig 豬 | Water 壬 | Wood |
Example: 寅 Yín (Tiger) carries Wood as its main energy, with Fire and Earth as secondary influences underneath.
The Zodiac
Your zodiac animal is the most visible layer of your chart — but only one layer. The animal comes from your Year Branch 年支, and the year also carries an element. Two Tigers born in different elemental years live very different lives: one a Wood Tiger 甲寅, another an Earth Tiger 戊寅. The animal is the face; the chart is the person.

Useful folklore shorthand — but real relationship readings depend on the full Four Pillars chart, not the animal alone.
The Ten Gods
Shí Shén 十神 describe how each pillar's energy relates to your Day Master. Each pair below shares a theme — a direct, steady form and an indirect, unconventional one.
What you earn steadily.
What you gain resourcefully.
Duty and structure.
Challenge and discipline.
Creative expression.
Unconventional talent.
Nurturing knowledge.
Unconventional wisdom.
Sibling energy.
Shared ambition.
Each god appears in your chart and colors a life domain — career, love, health, family. Together they form the personality portrait a full report unfolds.
Why the hour matters
In Chinese timekeeping, each two-hour period is one Earthly Branch, called a 時辰 Shí Chen. The hour pillar is the fourth pillar of your chart — born two hours earlier or later, and the entire chart changes.
That's why we ask for your birth time precisely, and why we apply true solar time 真太陽時: your birth certificate records clock time, but the traditional system works with the sun's actual position at your birthplace. A child born in Urumqi at 23:30 by Beijing clock is already in the next day's early hours by true solar time — we correct for this automatically when you enter your birth city.
Luck Cycles
A Four Pillars chart does not stay frozen. From your birth moment, a sequence of ten-year luck cycles 大運 (Dà Yùn) unfolds, each shifting the balance of elements in your life.
Illustrative sample only — the ages above are for explanation; your own luck cycles depend on your exact birth time, gender and starting pillar. 图中年龄区间仅为样例,每个人的起运岁数与十年周期各不相同。
The same person in a Water-supporting decade experiences very different circumstances than in a Fire-draining one. Reading the chart without the cycles is like reading a map without the weather.
Cultural context & honest boundaries
No chart, however rich, tells you what to decide. It tells you which lens your decisions look best through.
BaZi is a cultural system of symbolic interpretation — not a scientific prediction tool. We present it with the depth it deserves, and with the boundaries honesty requires: readings are reflective insights, not forecasts of specific events.
