Year, month, day and hour — each as a Heavenly Stem over an Earthly Branch. Eight characters in total, which is why the system is called 八字, "eight characters".

BaZi is calculated in the traditional calendar, where the year boundary is not 1 January but 立春, the start of spring, usually 3–5 February. Someone born on 20 January belongs to the previous BaZi year even though the Gregorian year has already turned. The tool converts with the established lunar-javascript library rather than an approximation, because those boundaries matter.
Clocks are a political convenience. China runs the entire country on Beijing time, so a person born in Urumqi is two hours off their local solar noon. BaZi was built on local sun time, so the correction matters — and it can move a birth across an hour-branch boundary. The tool corrects for longitude and the equation of time, and where the difference is large enough to change the Hour Pillar, the result says so explicitly rather than silently recomputing.
The day pillar follows the continuous sixty-term day count; the month pillar follows the solar terms rather than the calendar month; the hour pillar follows the two-hour branch of the birth time. None of these are lookups — they are arithmetic on a fixed calendar, which is why the same birth moment always produces the same chart.
Each character contributes its phase, and the resulting distribution decides whether the Day Master is supported or depleted. That judgement produces the useful and avoided elements — the output every other tool depends on.
Birth details entered here are stored in your browser's local storage on your own device. They are not sent to our servers, because there are no servers holding them — the chart is computed by JavaScript running in your page. Clearing your browser data clears the profile. You can keep more than one profile, and switch between them; each is stored under the same conditions.
The consequence worth knowing: because the profile lives in your browser, it does not follow you to another device or another browser. You will need to enter the birth details again there. That is the cost of not having an account, and we consider it a reasonable trade. Full detail is in our privacy policy.

Almost always the 立春 boundary. BaZi changes the year at the start of spring, not at New Year and not on 1 January. If you were born in late January or early February, check the boundary date for your birth year.
