BaZi and Relationships: Reading Two Charts Together

Ask about compatibility in Chinese astrology and you will usually get an answer about animal signs — Rat and Ox good, Rat and Horse difficult. That answer is not wrong, and it is close to useless, because it uses one character out of eight for each person.

A real comparison is between two charts, and what it produces is not a score. It is a description of how two particular people are likely to interact — where they support each other, where they collide, and which periods will test them.

The marriage palace

The first thing a practitioner looks at is the branch of the day pillar — the character sitting directly under the Day Master. It is called the spouse palace (配偶宮) and it describes the closest relationship in a life, whether or not that relationship is romantic.

The Day Master and its branch sit in the same pillar, which is why this pairing is read as unusually intimate: the branch is the environment the self is sitting in. A Day Master sitting on a branch that supports it describes a person who is steadied by closeness. A Day Master sitting on a branch that drains or clashes with it describes someone for whom intimacy is the place where the real work happens.

Alongside this, the classical tradition reads the wealth figure as the spouse in a man’s chart and the officer figure in a woman’s. Modern practice often sets this aside as an artefact of the society that produced it, and works from the chart as a whole instead. Both approaches exist; the older one is more specific, the newer one usually more accurate for people whose lives do not resemble a Ming-dynasty household.

Three levels of comparison

Level 1: animal signs (生肖合婚)

The familiar method: compare the year branches. Six-harmony pairs (六合) like Rat–Ox or Rabbit–Dog are favourable; clashes (相冲) like Rat–Horse or Tiger–Monkey are not.

This is the level most popular writing stops at, and it uses roughly 12% of the available information — one branch out of sixteen across two charts. It is worth knowing because it is culturally embedded, and worth treating as the beginning of a conversation rather than the end.

Level 2: the day pillars

A better approximation, and the level at which a reading starts to say something specific.

The relationship between the two Day Masters. Five possibilities, following the phases:

The relationship between the two day branches. Here the branch relationships apply directly: 六合 and 三合 describe closeness and ease, 相沖 describes structural opposition, 相刑 describes recurring self-inflicted difficulty, 相害 describes slow erosion. Applied to the spouse palace, these are read as descriptions of daily life together rather than of feeling.

Level 3: the full charts

The complete comparison adds:

Complementary useful elements. The most practically useful test in the whole system. If one person’s chart needs Water and the other’s supplies it — through their day master, their dominant elements, or the environment they naturally create — the pairing supplies something real. Two charts needing the same missing element compete for it instead.

Luck cycle synchronisation. If both charts enter demanding decades at the same time, the relationship will be tested by circumstances rather than by the two people. This is the part of compatibility analysis that most resembles useful advice, because it can be anticipated.

Where the strengths pile up. Two people with dominant 傷官 patterns will find each other exhilarating and will both be bad at the administrative side of life. Two dominant 正官 charts will be stable and may bore each other. Neither is a defect; both are worth knowing.

What the tradition actually claims

Three points that popular writing routinely gets wrong.

A clash is not a prohibition. 相沖 describes friction, not impossibility. The classical literature is full of long, difficult, successful marriages between clashing signs. What the reading says is that the friction is structural and will not disappear by itself — which is different from saying the relationship cannot work.

Compatibility is not a single verdict. It is a set of statements about different dimensions: emotional ease, practical support, timing, pressure points. A pair can be highly compatible in three and badly matched in two, and that is a normal description of a real relationship.

Charts describe dynamics, not destinies. The central claim of the tradition is that a chart shows the weather two people will experience together. What they do in that weather is not in the chart.

Using this honestly

If you are comparing two charts — your own and a partner’s — the useful questions are not “are we compatible” but:

  1. Where do we support each other? Which of my elements does their chart need, and vice versa.
  2. What is the structural friction? Is it a clash of method, a clash of tempo, or a clash of values? The first two are manageable; the third rarely is.
  3. When will it be tested? If both charts are entering demanding cycles, that is worth planning for rather than discovering.
  4. What does each of us do under pressure? The Ten Gods answer this directly — a 七殺-dominant person escalates under pressure, a 正印-dominant one withdraws.

That is a more useful output than a compatibility percentage, and it is closer to what the tradition was designed to produce.

FAQ

Can two people with clashing animal signs marry? Yes, and routinely do. The animal sign is the year branch — one character of eight. A clash there describes friction, not impossibility.

Which is more important, the animal sign or the Day Master? The Day Master by a wide margin. It is the centre of the chart; the year branch is the least personal of the four pillars.

What is the spouse palace? The branch of the day pillar — the character directly beneath your Day Master. It governs the closest relationship in your life.

Does a bad compatibility reading mean we should break up? No. A reading describes dynamics and pressure points; the decision is not in the chart. Treat it as information about where to be deliberate.

What does 相刑 mean for a couple? A penalty relationship — recurring difficulties that are largely self-generated rather than caused by outside events. The tradition’s advice is to notice the pattern rather than the incident.

Are same-sign couples a problem? Not inherently. Two identical charts mirror each other: exceptional mutual understanding and shared blind spots, with nothing to supply what both lack.
